Parabens
Parabens are series of esters of parahydroxylbenzoic acid, they are used as preservatives used in
cosmetics and pharmaceuticals products,
they have powerful antibacterial and fungicidal effects. They are found in
moisturizers , shaving cream , gel , body cream and lotions. Parabens are of
two types the propylparabens and methylparabens , with the former been effective on bacteria.
Effects of parabens on human skins
Though there are different type of parabens and its effects on the skin varies , but the
following are the most common effects.
·
Allergic reaction: parabeens are non-irritating
on individuals with normal skin ( there are different type of skin; dry, oily,
sensitive and normal) but individuals
with other skin types classified as paraben allergies are subjected to skin irritation
contact dermatitis and rosacea . this is because paraben can cause endocrine
disruption when they penetrate the skin.
·
Breast cancer : there is no concrete evidence
established about parabens causing breast cancer, the level in consumer
products are minimal, their current
level in consumer product are found to
be safe according to FDA and American association of cancer.
·
Estrogenous activity: te level o parabens in consumer products
are negligible to effect any estrogenoous activity in
humans,
·
Sun exposure: paraben of the type
metylparaben when exposed to the sun may
react with ultraviolet radiations leading increase in aging and DNA damage.
When picking a skin care product, look for
a paraben free product if you have a sensitive skin or if you are looking for
an anti-aging product as we have discussed the effects of methylparabens under
UV radiations.
